Classic Sportscars traces the remarkable developments which took place in the design of the sportscar between 1948 and 1978. Over a period of 30 years the traditions open-top sportscar, in which the driver braved the elements, was replaced by the enclosed couple or GT.
At first these two types did not compete with each other - car like the Porsche Speedster and the Mercedes 300SL, the Jaguar XK 120 and the Aston Martin DB2/4, the Short Chassis Ferrari and the Ferrari California co-existed side by side without too many problems. But with the arrival of the AC Cobra fierce rivalry set in between car makers, and the utlimate result was the Lamborghini Miura. After that things were never the same again. Ferrari, forced to respond to the challenge, followed the Daytona with the mid-engined BB. At Maserati the story was similar - after the classical Ghibli came the Bora. When Lamborghini unveiled the Countach the critics ran out of superlatives. Just as the battle was in full swing the oil crisis loomed, bringing to an abrupt end what had proved an extraordinarily creative period in the history of the automobile.
Lavishly illustrated throughout with 140 color photographs, Classic Sportscars is a fascinating and informative look at the worild's most glamorous sportscars. It is a must for everyone who dreams of the thrills and excitement of the open road.
